Mmmm cozy.

Mmmm cozy.

Slippers. Especially slippers that feel like fluffy new towels wrapped around my feet. Extra plus: machine washable.

Here are some things I’ve been looking at lately:

Rusted Root live music archive – archive.org

Just watched episodes 1-5 in the third season of Dexter.

Is anyone else watching this new season of Southpark? I hope so… As a girl, the episode where Wendy beats the cr*p out of Cartman is probably my favorite so far.

Teapots with infusers – I totally need at least a 4 cup one of these, with a locking lid for pouring and dishwasher safe.  I’m torn between porcelain and metal – however I think in the long run the porcelain will taste better!

The arms are dangerous and she talks to you.

The arms are dangerous and she talks to you.

Today I learned how to use the BookEye3 giant scanner.  The software connects through an ISP which was a new experience for me.  There is an automated voice thats speaks to you about power sequences and errors.  The arms are a little treacherous when they are positioned at head-height. Moving pannels to adjust for the book binding was a great tool I’ve never had access to before and using buttons to adjust levels was fun.  The interface was difficult to use from a cold start, but overall it was a kick to work with.

KNS Digital Archive Day 2

October 17, 2008

Special Collections at the Mason Library has decided to develop an online time-line of the College’s history in preparation for Keene State College’s Centennial Celebration. This is a collaborative project between the College Archivist, Head of Special Collections, and Library Dean. As the intern for this project I will be responsible for working with the information gathered by the Head of Special Collections and assisting with any additional research and design.

Today is when my design and web page experience came into play.  The goal for today was to get as much as possible from the 141 page document writen by the Special Collections Librarian.  I was able to translate most of the material to HTML format; at the bottom of the document was a large portion of highly formatted, multi-font material which I knew would take me a much longer time to format.  This material I postponed doing any formatting to in hopes to conserve time.  The newspaper articles had to be transcribed because the microfilm was in poor condition and flaky.  But these last pieces looked like official documents and my hope was that the originals would turn up and could be scanned.

Its orange and has organic cotton and fleece!

Orange organic cotton and fleece!

I imagine myself wearing this hoodie from She-Bible and being oh so cozy. At this point it’s over 50% off and I have a really hard time turning down such a comfy looking piece of USA small business merch.

I’ve been a committed Fluevogger since I was 15; I bought my first Angels at Zanna in Amherst. The sole of the shoe really hooked me, as it read: “The Seventh Heaven Angel sole is a 50% Latex and 50% Rubber combination sole that resists Alkali, Water, Acid, Fatigue and Satan”. I knew this was just what I was going to need on my feet for years to come. I think after about five years I replaced the soles, but the Angels are my one and only when it comes to black boots. When I got to the point when I wanted to free my ankles, I found the oxford style Angels on sale and added to the family. These got a lot of wear at community college; I was the newspaper and literary mag editor taking art classes and majoring in Communication.

It took me a while to realized I have a thing for nice shoes.

I have a thing for classy leather shoes.

Now I’m looking at sitting at a desk a lot of the time, and having to look older than just a college kid. If I’m going to wear skirts and act tall I’m going to want the shoes to do it with. Hence, Tillie. A little while ago there was a Mini Lily Darling in a rust colored tan with black edging, but it has gone. Again, the Tillie is over 50% but still a $75 purchase so it’s not something I really want to do on a whim. ^_^

KNS Digital Archive Day 1

October 10, 2008

Today I surveyed the material for my internship at the Keene State College Mason Library. A 141 page document has been created by the Special Collections and with materials that represent the early years for Keene State College.  My responsibilities are to work with Lucy Jones, the grant-funded archivist, to created a digital exhibit of the materials with a standardized finding aid for the online collection.  Many of the sources are poorly-stored microfilm copies of century old Keene Evening Sentinel newspaper articles; for these we will use transcripts prepared by the Special Collections Librarian.  Other documents come from the school’s annual catalog, meeting notes and ceremony booklets.

“If anyone in this world should be thoroughly educated and trained it is the teacher.”

1907 letter to the Editor,

Keene Evening Sentinel

Until 1939 Keene State College was the Keene Normal School, a teacher’s college.  The New Hampshire State Teacher’s Association declaration of principles for 1907 and 1908 included a call for normal schools to meet the increased need for primary school teachers in the New Hampshire school system.  At the turn of the century the NH school system only provided 50 new teachers each year when the district demand was closer to 350.  The hiring of inexperienced teachers was counteracted with standards set by Normal Schools.  As teaching developed into a profession, more training schools for teachers were required.

My first semester as a GSLIS student! Hooray! The past eight weeks have required more discipline than any other time in my life and  I don’t think it is going to get any easier.  My brain is getting stretched and tenderized.  Soon it will be in a MLIS mold and I will be assimilated!

I’m driving out to the Simmons Boston campus every Tuesday for half of my GSLIS courses.  Thursday night and Saturday morning I fit in the other two at GSLIS West, Mount Holyoke.  I do a few hours of cataloging at the Goodwin Memorial Library in Hadley on Thursday.  My archives internship (requirement for LIS 438) is with the Mason Library at Keene State College in New Hampshire on Fridays.

In order to do all this commuting at the beginning of the semester I bought a 1992 Honda Civic sedan from my roommate, a mechanic and Honda fanatic .  He had customized the car a bit; it has a lighter flywheel and a re-machined head.  I put on a new set of directional tires for the highway miles.  The car is a pleasure to drive.  So far I think I’ve put almost 2K miles on it.  Luckily, all these miles are at 30 mpg; so in many ways the car is treating me quite well.
